If symptoms continue after six weeks, your doctor might order an echocardiogram in order to determine if your cardiac health has improved. You may be able stop taking your medication if the results are normal. There are cases where people experience a rhythm problem or congestive hearts failure. Although symptoms of broken-heart syndrome are not serious, they can lead people to congestive or other serious complications.

Stress cardiomyopathy

Chest pain and dyspnea are symptoms of stress cardiomyopathy. Stress cardiomyopathy is similar to symptoms in acute cardiac conditions such as heart attack and acute myocardial damage. But, stress cardiomyopathy can be triggered by an emotional or physical stressor, not heart attacks. An accident or recent major surgery could be physical stressors.


Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, also known as broken heart syndrome, can be a stress-induced type of heart condition. Although it has similar symptoms to heart attacks, it does not necessarily mean that there is an underlying cause. Patients suffering from this condition have their left ventricle contracted and enlarged, which causes pain and shortness in breath. Although takotsubocardiopathy appears to have no connection with underlying heart disease it is still worth looking into.

Notch pathway

Recent studies indicate that the Notch pathway plays an important role in cardiac remodeling. The pathway is activated by using an antibody against Notch1. Transaortic constriction causes a pressure overload within the LV. This activates Notch1 in both TGJ1 and WT mice. Echocardiographic studies of the cardiac dimensions and function of the WT- and TGJ1 mouse models revealed that Notch1 expression in these tissues caused a hypertrophic heart.

A restoration of Notch signaling can also help to prevent atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is an inflammation-promoting condition that causes increased Notch activity. Notch downregulation in mice inhibits the ability of the heart and other organs to heal wounds. However, manipulation of the Notch signaling pathway requires great care. It is possible that the p53 protein could influence Notch's pleiotropic properties. In humans, it is unclear whether these protein inhibitors are effective in preventing atherosclerosis.
